Now a days parents are showing a special interest on their children to get an admission in private CBSE and ICSE schools. Even for getting an admission in first standard they are being levied huge amounts as donation. Is it really worthy? Anyway, I want to share an incident that happened recently.
Last week when I was waiting for bus in a bus stand, I got a chance to talk with a 12th standard CBSE student which held me astounded.
Firstly, I asked about his name and school name (P.S I don’t wish to reveal them anyway). Then, I asked about his future plans and he said he wish to go for medical studies. Later on, we discussed about entrance test and his own opinion on the entrance coaching he was undergoing .He said he always had a tight schedule that he had to attend it even on holidays and also added that he was not getting ample time to study.
Later on I asked his views on politics and social events (I always do). I got to know that he was not interested in politics and not a communist-minded .I wittingly (but not) asked him about the ration card and enquired about his name in card. To my astonishment, he wasn’t aware of his name in ration card or not simply he was completely unaware of such a card. This got me further interested to ask more about such things. I asked him about cost of 1kg rice. To add to my astonishment, from his facial expression, I understood that he didn’t know about it. I asked him give some guess. He said it was between 50 and 75, I wondered because even good variety Biryani race won’t cost that much. Every Sundays he has to attend coaching classes, hence he rarely goes to church, furthermore he don’t even know his neighbours and even Malayalam language but he is good in his academics.
This is not a unique incident in my life, but now I got the chance to write about this. Anyway after some years, he will be a doctor. How a doctor can do his job (no, its service) without knowing the heartbeat of society? Surely he will do his job as machines do….
Who is responsible for this situation? I will say the main culprits are their parents. They are very eager to make their children simply doctors, engineers, civil servants only in certificates but not in real life. No one is interested to keep a good relation with their community, society, nation etc. Thus, these parents are making simply Amul babies who lack capacity or capability to handle problem because they haven’t seen or faced real issues ever in their life. Lacking the ability to tackle even small problems, their lives end in miserable situations and are likely to end in suicides. This is one of the main reasons for increasing number of suicides and suicide attempts in a so called “highly educated” Kerala.
In order to overcome this serious problem, parents should take the steps in their home itself. Teach them how to get good attachment to the environment where they are staying, allow them to visit neighbour’s houses, allow them to play with their friends, help and care those who deserve it etc. Thus gradually you can cultivate the sense of commitment to the society in the minds of your children. Once they attain this great quality they will never lose in their life. Thus you are making a powerful, wise, and caring new generation. If you do so you are doing the worthiest thing for your children and to our nation.
